My current research is in the area of temporalities of change and the horizons of imagination that are constructed by various actors in this time of instability and crisis.

I focus on the emerging technology of Cellular Agriculture and Precision Fermentation from a multistakeholder perspective in the investigation of how these technologies are socially embedded.

My previous work focused on a comparative study of food consumption and environmental impact in the Global South, comparing Brazil and China. Through this research, I discussed what new values, expectations, and imaginations emerged from the change in diet in contexts of social mobility and improved living conditions over the last three generations.

emerging food technologies in the protein transition:

cellular agriculture & precision fermentation

My main interests lie at the intersection of sociological studies on imagination, temporality and sustainable development. My current research is focused on the development of new food technologies, protein transition and new visions of futures in the face of climate change. I'm currently part of the Animal-free Milk Consortium, where I investigate the development of Precision Fermentation technology in milk production. The development of this technology impacts and at the same time is impacted by the various players belonging to this innovation ecosystem. However, a change in the production matrix will also have an impact on actors involved in conventional milk production. My work focuses on issues of imaginations and temporality, placing animal-free milk protein technology in a broader social context, comparing its social, nutritional and environmental aspects with bovine milk proteins to determine how the technology can be incorporated into society.

Friends Eating Together

meat narratives in climate change

the taste of prosperity in china and Brazil

The act of eating, besides nutrition, is an act of imagination as it involves memories, social realities perceptions, and people's aspirations for a better future. In the context of Climate Change, food production is pointed out as a resource intensive industry connecting Global South countries as important producers and emerging markets. Animal products, especially meat, are in the spotlight in the context of Sustainable Diets due to their high emission of greenhouse gases and water footprint. However, it is also important to discuss the role of meat consumption from a sociological perspective as it embodies different narratives and meanings in different generations. While the young generation can bring the perspective of meat's negative environmental impact, the older generation relates it to memories of deprivation and class mobility as well as dreams of achieving a better life. This intergenerational encounter can result in conflict, but it also carries the potential of mutually influencing and multiplying new food consumption practices. Therefore, first-hand ethnographic data was collected from young consumers who negotiated between personal values and family narratives around their household meat consumption in Shanghai, China and in São Paulo, Brazil. These students recognized that in addition to the information they brought to their family, other factors exert more signicant influence, such as their experiences of food deprivation, their views of what a "better life" consists, and their experience of social mobility. Food consumption and the new role of Sustainability require an intercultural, intergenerational, and global debate in order to build an inclusive and just path towards Social Change.

global south dialogues

Besides developing research and teaching Chinese Sociology and Sino-Brazilian intercultural communication, I am the founder and organizer of the Annual Brazilian Postgraduate Seminar on China Studies (Seminário Pesquisar China Contemporânea), which is the longest-standing conference on China studies in Brazil. It has been gathering prominent scholars in the field since 2017.

The book "How China is Transforming Brazil" results from seven years of research and connecting and building a community of scholars researching different aspects of China-Brazil relations. This book brought together different generations of researchers in different fields, including also environmental and energy issues.

new methodologies from the global south

intergenerational knot

The Anthropocene is not only a period of rapid environmental transformation but also a prolific moment of values changes. In the face of the climate emergency, different actors respond in various ways. While the temporality dimensions of this phenomenon are a challenge to social sciences inquiry, it also presents a great opportunity for new methodologies to emerge. The generational knot can be a useful methodological frame for understanding social change through the discussion of different values across different generations' food consumption because, at the same time, it evidences differences and disagreement; it also shows the effort and willingness to negotiate in order to maintain social-kinship ties. While the intergenerational encounter can result in conflict, it also carries the potential of mutually influencing and multiplying new food consumption practices. While the young generation analyzed usually prioritise environmental impact when choosing what to eat, the older generation relates it to memories of deprivation and class mobility as well as dreams of achieving a better life. The generational knot, in this sense, becomes a useful methodological frame to understand values change in social and environmental transformation processes in an inclusive way.

sustainable food & scientific communication

Sustentarea is a project based in the Public Health Department of the University of São Paulo and aims to bring academia and the community together in the research and discussion on food sustainability. We develop debates based on scientific research on the impact of food not only on human health but also on the environment. I am part of the Strategic Planning and Science Communication Podcast teams.

Strategic Planning: Our team is in charge of Marketing Strategies, Advocacy, and Funding, and I have also been leading the Mentorship Program, which aims to connect and engage more experienced professionals with university students to share and dialogue and, in this way, build a community based on respect, mutual understanding, and the commitment to a sustainable and fair food system.

Science Communication: Podcast “Comida que Sustenta”: I am co-leader of a team that produces episodes on Sustainable Diets and Planetary Health, bringing scientific knowledge in an accessible language to make the debate on food and sustainability more inclusive.
